13 Reasons why you need to take up Snowboarding in 2018

January 23, 2018

So you’re looking for a brand new sport to try in 2018, but everything seems so boring and… gym-like. Well, no problemo amigo! Lucky for you, there are millions of different, more unusual and interesting sports to try and all of them will keep you fit and living life to its fullest.

Discovering the world of snow sports

I’ve always been one for trying the less conventional sports and hobbies, and nearly 10 years ago I discovered a magical place called Runcorn Dry Ski Slope. Actually, it’s the least glamorous place in the world but at the time, it was the cheapest place to try your hand at a little snow sport!

Fast-forward to present day and I’m still an awful snowboarder, but there’s nothing I love more than jumping on my board and heading down a slope. The freedom it gives you is something you’ll be hard-pressed to find in any other sport, which is why I wanted to share my top 13 reasons why you should go and grab a board and take up snowboarding in 2018!

Take up Snowboarding in 2018

It’s amazing cardio!

Looking for a non-boring way to blast out some heart-healthy cardio? Take up snowboarding!

You may think it’s all just standing and sliding on a piece of wood, but you see how tired you are once you’ve been on and off that lift for the last hour!

The other day I went boarding and thought I’d track how many calories I burned, I managed a tasty 736 calories for 1 1/2 hours of snowboarding!

Your legs and abs have never been stronger

The way the boots are made mean your legs are constantly bent and your stance requires you to bend your knees even further! All that equals some pretty strong thighs.

You also have to have a pretty decent core, to help keep you up and balanced, which means that your abs are going to get an awesome workout as well!

The ultimate form of meditation

As soon as I’m heading down that slope, my mind is clear. There’s something about the freshness of the snow, the cool air and the smooth feel of your board sliding down the mountain that instantly soothes.

If you’re looking for the perfect way to unwind from a stressful day in work, then head to your local slope or mountain, strap on your board and get a few runs in, you’ll feel the stress melt away.

Everybody is awesome!

I’ve honestly never met a more laid back, friendly and just generally awesome community of people than that of snowboarders. Every single time I’ve been on the slope I’ve chatted, laughed and swapped tips with strangers.

There’s no hierarchy, no pretentious comments, just a group of people there to throw themselves down a mountain on a piece of wood, that bonds people man!

The freedom is irreplaceable

There really is no feeling like it, as soon as you hit the slope it’s as if nothing else matters and you are leaving all your troubles at the top of that hill.

Feeling the wind in your hair, the ice breeze on your face and the fresh air in your lungs has a way of setting you free from normal, everyday life!

The adrenaline rush alone is worth it!

Now, as a person with anxiety, adrenaline isn’t usually my friend, but that’s the scary adrenaline, this is the good kind that plasters a smile on your face and makes you want to do it time and time again!

Even if you’re not a complete adrenaline junkie, you can still take your time cutting through the snow at a leisurely pace, you’re in control!

You get to wear the coolest gear

I never feel cooler than when I’m in my snowboard gear. You can wear any colour of the rainbow and it is completely normal.

Would I ever wear neon pink pants walking down the street? Probably not, but put me near a slope and I’m rocking those babies like I never knew I could.

Snowboarding is all about fun and the gear you can get your hands on reflects this in spades! Bright colours make you happy and you don’t get brighter than a pair of snowboard pants!

There’s always new tricks and techniques to learn

Even the best of the best are still learning new techniques and tricks! This doesn’t mean you’ll never be an awesome snowboarder, but it does mean that you’ll never get bored!

There is always something new to learn, a new trick a new skill (did somebody say riding switch?) a new mountain to ride, destinations to see and boards to try out. Snowboarding can open up a whole new world to you and even new travel destinations, helping you keep things fresh time and time again!

It offers the most stunning views

We snowboarders get the very best views. Making your way to the top of the mountain and seeing the vastness of the earth splayed out before you is something that never fails to take your breath away, no matter how many times you see it.

How many other sports do you know that rolls a scenic ride with a fun and adrenaline-fuelled workout into one?

It’s a top anxiety buster

Even though I always feel a little nervous before I jump on the slope, as soon as I push off down that hill, any anxiety that I had disappears.

I’ve suffered from anxiety for many many years and snowboarding is one of the few times I don’t feel that crippling tightness in my chest and the feeling of impending doom.

Yeh, I’m a little bit nervous about breaking my tailbone (again… oops!) but it’s that excited kind of nervous that makes you feel awesome afterward!

It looks cool as hell!

Come on now, it does though doesn’t it!

You’ll have the best holidays

There ain’t no party like a snowboard partaaay!

Visit some of the liveliest and most sociable destinations in the world and find out what it means to live freely both on and off the slope!

It’s by far the most fun you’ll ever have!

Ok, I’ll be completely honest. Since taking up snowboarding, I’ve hurt myself a lot. I’ve done my back in, broke my tailbone, cut my lip, but every single time you know what worried me the most? That it would be ages before I could get back on the slope.

There’s something about this sport that makes you fall in love with it. I don’t know anyone who snowboards and says ‘Yeh it’s alright, but cba going on the slope tonight’, nope… no way!

Even if you feel terrified standing at the top looking down, I guarantee you’ll come away from your run/lesson desperate to get your board strapped back on your feet and sliding down that mountain just one more time.
