Intuition – ‘The ability to understand something instinctively, without the need for conscious reasoning.’

Intuition. It’s your gut feeling, that little voice inside your head and the almost physical force that stops you from taking the wrong path. It is one of the most amazing things our minds are capable of and the closest thing we have to a psychic ability for most people.

Have you ever known someone was going to call or text before they did? Maybe your friend was in trouble or sad and you instinctively knew to call her before she could even let you know something was wrong. All of these little ‘psychic‘ moments in life is our natural intuition kicking in.

Intuition can appear in many forms and even varying strengths, depending on how in tune you are with it and how often you flex that muscle. It can be something like a sinking in your stomach, a feeling of being unable to physically move forward or simply a voice in your head telling you to do something specific.

You will never follow your own inner voice until you clear up the doubts in your mind.

We encounter our intuition most commonly in our daily life. For example, choosing not to go home with that guy you’ve been chatting up all night because it didn’t ‘feel‘ right. It could even be something as simple as checking on someone because you have a ‘feeling‘ something isn’t right.

Intuition is a skill that needs to be practiced

We are all born with intuitive thinking, but not everyone can experience or benefit from its full effects. It takes time, practice and importantly, the ability to trust yourself and your natural instincts.

Intuition Meditation

Those that don’t benefit from their intuition will often find themselves going down paths that do not serve them, or have a negative impact on their lives. It’s a bit of a use it or lose it situation, even though you haven’t completely lost it, you start to become unaware of it or even numb to the feelings.

Meditation is an essential travel partner on your journey of personal transformation. Meditation connects you with your soul, and this connection gives you access to your intuition, your heartfelt desires, your integrity, and the inspiration to create a life you love.

There are plenty of ways you can start to strengthen your intuition, but the first and most important thing you need to do is to listen and trust yourself. Once you’ve established trust, you’ll be able to fully lean into those intuitive feelings.

3 ways you can strengthen your intuition

Your intuition usually raises its head when you are in a tough situation or cornered by a difficult decision, but you don’t have to put yourself into these positions in order to practice intuition. Here are my favourite ways to strengthen and flex those intuitive muscles:

  1. Buy a deck of tarot cards – One of my favourite ways to test my intuition is by giving myself a tarot reading. Not only do I have to use my intuition to pick the cards, but I also have to use it in order to understand them and what they are trying to tell me.
  2. Meditation -Yep, it’s back! Good old meditation is a great way to unlock your subconscious mind (the root of your intuitive brain) and start using your intuition to pick apart your day, problems or thoughts and intuitively understand them better.
  3. Journalling – I like to write down fears, thoughts and feelings that I’m struggling with and use my intuition to work through them. It’s a version of a therapy worksheet I was given by my last councillor. By writing everything down, you have the opportunity to step out of your head and use your other senses to see the truth of the situation, giving your intuitive brain room to breath.

You don’t have to be spiritual to believe in the invisible force of intuition

I credit my strong intuitive thinking to my Wiccan religion. We Wiccans have to practice our intuition pretty much daily, it helps us connect to the energy around us and aids in things like divination. You don’t have to be spiritual or religious to fully believe in your intuition though. There’s a more scientific way of seeing things.

Our bodies have five senses: touch, smell, taste, sight, hearing. But not to be overlooked are the senses of our souls: intuition, peace, foresight, trust, empathy. The differences between people lie in their use of these senses; most people don’t know anything about the inner senses while a few people rely on them just as they rely on their physical senses, and in fact probably even more.

Your intuition can also be linked to the human fight or flight reflex. It’s an animalistic trait that has stuck with us over the millions of years of evolution. It is designed to protect us and keep us safe, which is why we will often get that slightly uneasy feeling in the pit of our stomach when our intuition kicks in.
